any one know of a good 'tutorial' or book I can read up on a software defined phase lock loop?

John,
IMHO a good one is Chapter 5 of "Phase-Locked Loops", Design Simulation and Applications Roland. E. Best (McGraw-Hill) where the Software PLL is covered in depth
The book is recommended as it covers in from first priciples the whole topic of PLL's. Analog, Digital and Software and is written for practising Engineers and Students.
