It is a case of lack of alignment and lack of proper resolution. If you have a freqenecy in the signal that is 5 Hz and you are doing a 64 point DFT with a sampling frequency of 128, then your resolution is 128/64 = 2 Hz. At this resolution the closest you can come to 5 Hz is at 4 and 6 Hz. So the power in that frequency will be averaged over the 4 and 6 Hz bins. This will make the spectrum wider than it really is. That's spectrum leakage.
